Located at the Department of Crop Production Ecology, Uppsala
Ref no
1017/07
The Department of Crop Production Ecology is responsible for undergraduate
education, research and postgraduate education within the areas of
production biology of crops, short rotation forestry - bioenergy, weed
biology and weed management, and ecology of cropping systems.
Undergraduate education is mainly provided in soil/plant and animal
science within the Agriculture degree programme and in energy systems
within the Civil Engineering degree programme.
Research area: The person appointed to the post will be responsible, via
basic and applied research, for furthering understanding of the processes
in the plant that control the growth, development and production of
agricultural crops important for Northern Europe now and in the future.
The focus is on the function of the entire plant and its interactions with
the surrounding environment, and on environmental conditions during
practical cropping. The processes expected to be under investigation are
those that contribute significantly to production in agricultural systems
(e.g. photosynthesis, respiration, nitrogen uptake) and those that relate
these processes to quantitative and qualitative aspects of final
production (yield). The relationships between cropping methods, the links
between productivity and biodiversity and crop production in a changing
climate are of particular interest.
The person appointed to the post of University Lecturer will be expected
to pursue and expand research within the above areas, collaborate with
other researchers at the Department and supervise postgraduate students.
Teaching at undergraduate level is also an important part of the job. The

PhD position in conservation genetics
Topic: Conservation genetics of the protected moth Graellsia isabelae
Location: A Coruna (NW Spain) and Orléans (France)
The PhD project is focused on Graellsia isabelae (Graëlls, 1849) a moth
(Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) distributed mainly in Spain, with a few small
populations in France and Switzerland. It is highly protected at both
national and international level. However, there is neither genetic nor
population data which would allow to set up a suitable conservation plan
for this species. The PhD student will use newly developed microsatellite
markers and DNA sequence data to define Evolutionary Significant Units by
studying intraspecific genetic variability, population genetic structure
and divergence.
The project is supervised by Dr Marta Vila and Dr Horacio Naveira,
University of A Coruna (Spain) and Dr Carlos Lopez-Vaamonde (INRA Orléans,
France). It is funded for 4 years by the Spanish Ministry of Education and
Science (FPI program, 2 years fellowship + 2 years working contract).
Salary for the first two years (fellowship, no taxes) is 13,440 euros per
year. The salary increases to 16,100 euros per year for the third and
fourth year (contract, before taxes). The project will be based in A
Coruna, while some important experiments will be performed in Orléans.
Requirements for the position: (i) high motivation, (ii) a good academic
record, (iii) fluency in both English and Spanish, (iv) driving licence,
(v) willingness to spend long periods of time abroad. A good level of
French, knowledge of population genetics as well as prior experience in
the field (e.g., capture-mark-recapture) and laboratory (i.e., DNA
sequencing, microsatellite genotyping) will be highly valued. Women are
especially encouraged to apply.
Please send applications with one page CV including contact information
for two references to Marta Vila (marta.vila.taboada@gmail.com). Please
write "PhD application" as the e-mail subject when applying. Use the above
e-mail address for any informal query about the position. Applications
must be received by October 31, 2007. Start of position: June-July 2008.
Two PhD positions in plant invasion biology at the University of Bern, Switzerland
We are seeking two PhD students highly motivated to work on determinants of

New Vacancies from Academic Transfer
New Vacancies from Academic Transfer
There are 48 new vacancies:
Ph.D. Position, [URL]
Leiden University This PhD projects aims to develop novel targeted carriers for influenza antigens (to be provided by Nobilon/Solvay).
Primarily phospholipid based vesicles will be used as nanoparticulate antigen carriers (size range ca. 50-500 nm). If necessary, polymeric carriers will also be studied. The nanocariers will be loaded with influenza antigens and optimised for their capability to target dendritic cells (DC). Option for this include (i) incorporating positively charged lipids into the bilayer, (ii) covalently attaching positively charged oligomers to the phospholipid bilayer (e.g., TAT peptides or oligoarginines possessing cell-penetrating capabilities), and (iii) incorporating DC targeting ligands (e.g., mannosylated lipids) into the lipid bilayer. DC activation will be steered and promoted by adding adjuvants (e.g., Lipid A derivatives, CpG sequences). The adjuvants will be either mixed with the vesicles, or co-encapsulated in the lipid bilayer or in the aqueous compartment of the vesicles. The adjuvants will be selected based on the required Th1/Th2 balance. Moreover, endosomal escape/membrane disruptive promotors will be co-encapsulated in the bilayer of the antigen-containing vesicles to achieve cytosolic delivery of the antigens, which should lead to enhanced MHCI presentation. The targeted antigen-loaded nanoparticles will be incorporated into advanced modified-release systems to be developed by OctoPlus. Continuous (pseudo zero-order) and pulsed-release systems will be compared for their ability to be used as single-shot vaccines: one injection mimicking 2-3 conventional immunisations.

Post-doc Measuring and Modelling Electromagnetic Brain Activity [URL]
Radboud University Nijmegen The Measuring and Modelling Electromagnetic Brain Activity Group at the F.C. Donders Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging at Radboud University Nijmegen (NL) seeks an outstanding post-doctoral researcher to investigate connectivity and plasticity in the human brain. It has been proposed that oscillatory synchronization between brain regions reflect functional connectivity and exchange of information. Using the human somatosensory system we will investigate this hypothesis using haptic detection and working memory paradigms. Furthermore protocols will be applied to modulate the synaptic connectivity in the somatosensory system. The consequences on behavior and oscillatory synchronization will be investigated. This research will primarily be done using a whole MEG system (275 channel, VSM/CTF). This multidisciplinary project is funded by the Netherlands Organization for Science Research (NWO).

Radboud University Nijmegen The Measuring and Modelling Electromagnetic Brain Activity Group at the F.C. Donders Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging at Radboud University Nijmegen (NL) seeks an outstanding PhD-student for a project investigating the relationship between human working and long-term memory. For several decades it has been debated in the cognitive psychology community whether long-term memory operations require the cooperation of the working (short-term) memory system. Of particular interest is how brain oscillations are involved in this cooperation. We will address this question using state-of-the-art brain imaging techniques and novel analysis methods. The techniques to be used are MEG, to characterize the temporal dynamics of working memory maintenance, and fMRI, to characterize the brain areas engaged. This multidisciplinary project is funded by the Netherlands Organization for Science Research (NWO).

PhD "Biomass gasification: in-bed measures for gas conditioning and cleaning" [URL]
Technische Universiteit Eindhoven
Tasks:
The group is looking for suitable candidates for a project within the Dutch Research Consortium ‘Biomass Gasification and Gas Cleaning" of Energy Research Centre of The Netherlands ECN, three Dutch Technical Universities, and Biomass Technology Group BTG. The aim of the consortium programme is the development of biomass gasification systems to convert biomass efficiently into syngas and substitute natural gas SNG, and in the next steps electricity and biofuels.
The PhD project carried out at TU/e refers to the development of in-bed methods which are primarily effective for the route from biomass-to-SNG in order to increase the overall efficiency of this process. The conventional route for SNG production is based on gasification of biomass to syngas and the subsequent methanation of syngas to SNG. It is desired that the syngas contains a high initial yields of methane as the conversion of H2 and CO in the subsequent methanation step involves a substantial efficiency loss.
The main objective of the project is to develop a set of effective in-bed methods for biomass (indirect) gasifiers, which are able to optimize gas composition resulting particularly in higher methane yield, reduced tar content and specific H2/CO ratio. In-bed measures which will be considered are use of bed additive/catalyst, proper selection of operating parameters and eventual gasifier modification. To this end the fundamental research will be carried out in the area of kinetics and mechanism of (catalytic) reactions taking place in the gasifier that can lead to more CH4 yield and less tars.

For decision making in the higher level (sub)system(s) of this framework, a key aspect of the work is to develop aggregate queuing models (discrete-event or analytical) following the effective process time approach.
Phd Student "Efficient Geometric Algorithms for Terrains" [URL]
Technische Universiteit Eindhoven
Project description:
Traditionally, in computational geometry the running time of an algorithm is analysed as a function of n, the number of input elements. Unfortunately, such an analysis often fails to give a good prediction of the running time of the algorithm in practical situations. An important reason for this is that the shape and/or distribution of the input objects, as well as the I/O- and caching-behavior of the algorithm, can have a large influence on the actual efficiency of the algorithm. The goal of the project "Towards a practical theory of geometric algorithms" is to develop and analyse geometric algorithms and data structures while taking these considerations into account. The PhD position is part of this project and will focus on algorithms for terrains.

Phd Student "Optimal Geometric (Data) Structures [URL]
Technische Universiteit Eindhoven
Project description:
Spatial data structures play a fundamental role in computational geometry and its applications. Many of these data structures, especially the ones that are used in practice, are based on geometric structures such as space partitionings or coverings of the objects by bounding volumes. The performance of the resulting data structures depends directly on certain properties of the underlying geometric structure. Hence, a lot of research in computational geometry has gone into designing algorithms that construct geometric structures with good properties. Most existing research in this area, however, has focused on geometric structures whose properties are good in the worst-case. This means that when the actual input happens to be much easier than a worst-case input, the performance of the resulting data structure can be far from optimal. In this project we will study algorithms for constructing geometric structures that are (close to) optimal for any input, leading to spatial data structures that are as efficient as possible for the actual data they store.

Postdoc in Interactive Sound Synthesis [URL]
Technische Universiteit Eindhoven
SATIN is a European project to develop SOUND AND TANGIBLE INTERFACES FOR NOVEL PRODUCT SHAPING. In this project virtual objects can be shaped by applying flexible strips over the surface of the virtual objects to be modelled. The strips will exercise force feedback so that the users can feel what they do. Furthermore, the movements of the users and contacts with the object will be coupled with sound which will give the user information about the material and surface properties of the object. The task of the applicant will be to synthesize these scraping and rubbing sounds on the basis of material and surface properties of the objects, so that the multimodal interface becomes more natural and intuitive. Various synthesis techniques can be used, partly dependent on the experience of the applicant, e.g. additive or subtractive synthesis, or synthesis based on acoustic models, such as partial differential equations or finite-element techniques. Moreover, the applicant will evaluate the added value of using sound in this multisensory interface. In summary, in the SATIN project, we will introduce and validate the new dimension of sound to communicate in an audible way local shape and material properties of virtual objects.

PH.D on Material Behaviour of Silicon Based Solar Cells [URL]
Delft University of Technology, Faculty of 3mE The Joining and Mechanical Behaviour Group in collaboration with ECN has a PhD vacancy: Material Behaviour of Silicon Based Solar Cells.
The high cost of silicon has led to a reduction in the thickness of wafers used in the production of photovoltaic solar cells. Practical experience has shown that this reduction in thickness has reached the limits of what can be permitted during the interconnection and lamination procedures of module production. This research will identify which stage(s) during the manufacturing process, from wafer to module, is (are) critical with respect to the introduction of stress or damage to the cell, resulting in its premature failure. This may be during wafer or cell processing, during interconnection or during lamination. The project will provide materials knowledge of the processing steps and an analysis of how the production process influences the stress state of the cell, interconnections or module.
The causes of failure; i.e., the material features leading to fracture and the local conditions under which fractures initiate and propagate are not yet well understood. Efficient techniques for stress measurement and damage characterisation should be developed. Thermo-mechanical numerical modelling will be undertaken predict failure probability based on the physical failure mechanisms identified.

The Research Group:
Research in the Department of Molecular Cell Biology is focused on two key processes: 1. Cell adhesion and migration and 2. Leukocyte-endothelium interactions. These topics are critical for the process of transendothelial migration and are studied in the context of inflammation and hematopoietic stem cell homing. The department comprises 12-15 people (postdocs, PhD and undergraduate students and technicians) that all work on related research topics.
Project:
It is well established that the chemokine Stromal Derived Factor-1 (SDF-1/CXCL12) and its receptor CXCR4 are critical in the homing of hematopoietic stem cells to the bone marrow and also controls the migration of other cell types (e.g. lymphocytes, neurons, breast cancer cells). Our most recent work has shown that we can alter CXCR4 expression and CXCL12-mediated migration positively as well as negatively, by modulation of ligand (in)dependent receptor recycling and intracellular signaling.
We will perform a detailed analysis of the molecular mechanisms underlying the regulation of cell surface CXCR4 expression and signaling in hematopoietic stem cells. This will involve analysis of the role of the CXCR4 C-terminal domain, of Rho-like GTPases (e.g. Rac1 and RhoA) and of Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinases. These topics will be addressed by a multidisciplinary approach combining biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, biophysics and eventually in vivo studies. This project will provide novel clues as to the control of cell migration in stem cell homing, inflammatory diseases or cancer cell metastasis.
